Future Earth built capacity across City Hall, central government and academic institutions to explore integrated digital tools to manage spatial planning and optimise investment decision making.
The first task was to build capacity across City Hall and associated government and academic departments to co-develop and use integrated digital IoT tools to manage renewable energy infrastructure planning in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator.
Secondly, to develop Mongolia’s first application as an accredited entity to the Green Climate Fund to enable anchor funding for the energy transition.
Following independence, the energy infrastructure of Ulan Bator did not keep pace with urban development and the influx of settlers to the city suburbs. The burning of coal in traditional gers meant the city was shrouded in toxic smoke when temperature inversions in the valley prevented the air from clearing and energy-hungry water, waste and transport infrastructure development lagged demand.
Smog over Ulan Bator
FCO funded a small consortium to build capacity across City Hall and central government and academic institutions to explore integrated digital tools to manage spatial planning and optimise investment decision making.
Following the successful initial outreach and engagement under a previous project, Future Earth designed and delivered the cross-government Stakeholder Engagement Strategy and Technical Capacity Building programme.
We oversaw logistics, coordination and moderation of the high-profile events with speakers from across the globe, as well as multiple technical capacity development sessions using cutting edge collaborative digital tools.
As a result capacity was built in over 70 staff and academics for integrated natural resource modelling and data management systems.
City Hall and the Economic Development Department were introduced to funding streams available under Green Climate Fund and Future Earth developed the first application for Readiness Funding for City Hall and following the accreditation of Xac Bank, Mongolia successfully secured GCF funding for renewable energy infrastructure.
