Accurate, verifiable data streams from solar systems (panels and batteries) are essential for the accurate billing, maintenance and operation of off grid solar systems. This is true for the end user who repays via pay-as-you-do mobile money systems; for solar solution providers who can more accurately diagnose system interruptions; and for investors who require robust proof of impact and emissions avoidance.
Future Earth sought out a company which was on the cusp of being able to expand its technical capacity to utilize relevant IOT functionality and ML data processing upgrades.
Under the Innovate UK Energy Catalyst Round 9 mid-stage projects, Future Earth lead a consortia to develop enhanced monitoring and data analytics to improve end user experience and market profitability of solar suppliers.
Future Earth partnered with Innovex an IOT and electronics hardware company based in Uganda and Greencrowd Partnership LLP a UK financial advisory company. Innovex, a start up from Makerere University had already developed a Remote Energy Monitoring Technology (REMOT) platform, combining hardware and software to connect solar systems and appliances to an IOT client portal.
Our goal was to accelerate market penetration and attract investment capital, powered by improving the functionality of REMOT hardware and software for data capture, data processing and analytics, and through the development of a new subscription “software as a service” model, an expanded client base.
1. A machine learning algorithms to predict systems output up to 3 days in advance .
2. Multiple component diagnostic algorithms that can detect anomalous behaviour and perform component-level analysis (e.g., panels, charge controllers, battery, inverter) and equipment diagnostics of water pumps, mills, cold storage.
3. A secure USSD payments integration system with mobile money platforms Flutterwave and Africastalking which communities use for digital payments.
4. A data management platform to provide added value analysis to clients with hourly data aggregation and account wide reporting and valuable for development sector investors.
5. A set of service management features to monitor platform usage activity, control access to platform features and bill users for access to features though credit cards, debit cards and other payment platforms vital for SaaS clients.
6. A mobile application compatible with both Android and IOS platforms which lowers access barriers and is useful for field operatives.
The ambitious success criteria were all exceeded after 18 months. Among these, a total of 386 installations were made with over 80,000 direct beneficiaries across schools, health centres, farms, businesses, community centres and markets.
The project enabled Innovex to grow its technical team from 9 to 21 full time staff including 6 new technical roles for women. The company is now in pole position as an African service-provider to deliver cost-effective solutions in the productive use energy (PUE) space.
