Building capacity in local NGOs on gender empowerment and livelihoods diversification
In the remote areas of the Northern District of Sierra Leone, rural communities struggle to produce sufficient food to feed themselves, sell their produce in markets when prices are high and protect their crops from droughts and floods.
Women and girls have little say in village governance or agricultural/forest management systems leaving them disadvantaged, disenfranchised and more vulnerable to climate and economic shocks and stresses.
Future Earth was contracted by Trócaire to work with local community organisations AAD-SL, DESAL and WOFHRAD on systems strengthening to support vulnerable women and youth through income diversification and progressive agro-ecological approaches.
We worked intensively will all partners, building capacity and together developed a robust, collaborative project proposal. We were successful in securing EUR 1.2 million from the EU Trust Fund for a 3-year programme.
By learning to map their economic and natural assets (with geo-satellite imagery) and developing local sustainability plans, communities are improving the natural resource management of the degraded forests and land. Using simple irrigation techniques and installing/upgrading wells, agricultural productivity is increased. Crucial is the programme of work educating women and girls on their rights under the gender justice laws.
