Future Earth researched and developed the initial financial sector climate adaptation plans for Antigua and Barbuda.
Under the UNDP Enabling Gender-Responsive Disaster Recovery, Climate and Environmental Resilience in the Caribbean (EnGenDER) project for the Department of Environment, Government of Antigua and Barbuda, Future Earth's team developed the Financial Sector Adaptation Strategy and M&E Plan for the Financial Sector (Regulators, Ministries of Finance, banks & credit unions).
The financial sector in the Caribbean is exposed to climate change shocks through its investments in businesses and individuals as well as through the internal governance and standard operating procedures which may or may not account for climate change. This project aimed to identify the vulnerabilities and risks to the finance sector and propose recommendations for enhancing its resilience to climate change.
Through a consultative, participatory process, we assessed the extent to which climate change and/or gender are integrated into the current financial sector policy and regulatory framework and proposed entry points for the integration of climate, gender and inclusive considerations.
Local organisational capacity for the governance of gender-responsive climate and risk resilience planning and resourcing was assessed using a standardised institutional capacity assessment and gendered adaptation considerations and opportunities for the finance sector which improve climate resilience identified across financial entities of different types including development finance institutions, credit unions, domestic and regional banks.
Stakeholder workshops with vulnerable communities and/or their representatives, helped to prioritize measures to be taken forwards.
