Developing and using integrated IOT digital management systems for improved management and resilience of energy, water and waste infrastructure.
Under the Future Cities Africa programme, Future Earth lead cross sector engagement and capacity building for the implementation of a DFID funded project to
1. Develop an integrated IOT management platform; 2. Build capacity across government entities to use integrated tools; and 3. Finance ongoing platform costs. The platform was intended to help the government of Accra improve urban resilience to climate change, social and economic shocks.
The Greater Accra Region contains 29 districts and many more sub-districts. The smooth running of energy, water and waste services relies upon timely, accurate coordination of physical, financial and human resources to plan, expand and maintain the services. As public sector financing and capacity is often a challenge, Accra suffers from delivery service gaps harming businesses, livelihoods and community wellbeing in an increasingly uncertain climate.
Alongside the development of the tool by the technical team based at Imperial College, London, Future Earth designed and delivered the Stakeholder Engagement Strategy and Technical Capacity Building programme to enable government ministries and their agencies to use digital IoT tools for collaboration and coordination on infrastructure planning, and the management of energy, water and waste resources.
Over the course of the project, over 250 key stakeholders were engaged from over 50 line ministries, communities, academic and private sector entities. Outputs: resilience.io prototype; x2 peer reviewed articles by partners Imperial Collage; x2 high level workshops >80 participants, x8 2-hour capacity building webinars with international experts for >30 technical staff from Ministry of Local Government, National Development and Planning Commission, University of Ghana, Local Government and Private Sector stakeholders with raft of supporting materials.
We were awarded a DFID A-rating for our work.
Future Earth also supported the development of a long-term sustainable financing model and led the first GCF Readiness Proposal for the Government of Ghana Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. We led the process of deliberation with all stakeholder including negotiations with the Ministry of Finance and GCF Accredited Entities to develop an urban investment fund supporting public private partnerships to finance essential infrastructure.
